Topic Description

Join the OPTA EnAbling Change Subcommittee for the launch of a public education and courtesy campaign for conventional transit services.

The 5-Year review of the AODA Transportation Standards in 2018 included a recommendation for a public education and courtesy campaign for transit riders. A subcommittee of OPTA members have been working with McCorkindale Advertising and Design over the past year to develop creative that can be used by transit systems as part of a province-wide campaign.

The EnAbling Change Program is a transfer payment program administered by the Province that provides funds for strategic partnerships with industry/sector leaders to significantly improve accessibility for people with disabilities and promote compliance with Ontario’s accessibility standards. The three courtesy messages of the transit campaign focus on:

  • Accessible seating and mobility aid spaces on conventional transit buses/vehicles for persons with visible and non-visible disabilities
  • Service animals, and accommodating same on public transit vehicles
  • Priority boarding on conventional transit services

Learning Objectives

  • Objective 1: Awareness of the EnAbling Change Project and the three messages recommended by the 5-Year Transportation Standards Review
  • Objective 2: Understanding of the subcommittee process to review and approve design proposals and messaging for the campaign
  • Objective 3: Commitment from OPTA members to implement and use the campaign creative on your system as part of the province-wide campaign launch
